LUCAS VIDAL
Representation: Global
Lucas Vidal is one of the most talented and successful music composers in the contemporary audiovisual industry.
Awarded with two Goya Awards and an Emmy, among others, his work encompasses an impressive variety of film projects. Among his most notable films are “Fast & Furious 6,” “Palm Trees in the Snow,” “Nobody Wants the Night,” “The Heineken Kidnapping,” and “Paradise Hills,” to name a few.
Vidal has also ventured into orchestral electronic music with his album “Karma,” released in 2020, and has been recognized by Forbes magazine as one of the 100 most influential creative figures.
His adolescence was marked by the music of Ennio Morricone and John Williams, inspiring him to dream of composing soundtracks. At 15, he attended a music composition camp at Berklee College of Music, where he later earned a double degree in Film Music and Composition. Vidal moved to New York to study at the Juilliard School and then to Los Angeles, where he began his career in Hollywood.
Lucas Vidal was born in Madrid in 1984 into a family indissolubly linked to music. His paternal grandfather, José Manuel Vidal Zapater, founded HISPAVOX in 1953, a Spanish record company of global projection where artists of the time such as Raphael, Karina, and Los Pekenikes launched their careers. From his mother’s side, he inherited his love for ballet. His cousins Yury, Zenayda, and Nadia Yanowsky are internationally renowned figures in ballet, performing with the Boston, London, and Wellington Ballet Companies, respectively. These foundations nurtured an innate passion for music from a very early age.
Thus, at the age of three, he began playing the piano, at seven the flute, and at ten he started to mute movies like ‘Cinema Paradiso’, dreaming of the sharps and flats he would add. The soundtrack of his adolescence was marked by Ennio Morricone and John Williams, the two great stars who would guide his path. At 15, Lucas Vidal applied for a place at Berklee College of Music (Boston) to attend a summer music composition camp. Those five weeks were enough to make a vital decision: he would fight for his dream of becoming a Hollywood soundtrack composer.
His great talent did not go unnoticed by the Berklee staff, the most prestigious center for soundtrack composition worldwide. Therefore, at nearly 18 years old, Lucas Vidal was offered a scholarship to pursue a double degree in Film Music and Composition. Aware of the great opportunity, he maximized his four years in Boston. This elite education, his enormous talent, and tireless dedication led him to become the youngest student in the center’s history to compose and record an orchestral soundtrack for his first movie ‘Cathedral Pines’ and to receive the two most important music composition awards from the educational institution.
After his triumphant time in Boston, where he graduated ‘Magna Cum Laude’ with a double degree, Lucas Vidal moved to New York to further his extraordinary education at the prestigious Juilliard School, where artists like John Williams and Miles Davis were trained. There, he attended classes with musical geniuses like Richard Danielpour.
In 2009, he made the definitive leap to the city of Los Angeles, settling in a small studio overlooking the Hollywood hills. These were years of extraordinary perseverance, culminating in 2012 with the dream opportunity to compose the soundtrack for ‘Fast and Furious 6’. Following this blockbuster at 28, his meteoric rise was unstoppable. He worked on successful films with actors like Bruce Willis, Sigourney Weaver, and John Cusack, and in 2016, he won an Emmy for composing the ESPN theme for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Far from resting on his laurels, Lucas Vidal immediately stepped out of his comfort zone to face new challenges. After conquering Hollywood’s Mount Olympus, he felt a strong desire to return to his roots and carve a niche in the Spanish market.
Following his principle of pursuing dreams with effort and sacrifice, Lucas Vidal began a phase between Madrid and Los Angeles, culminating in 2016 with two Goyas for the main theme of the feature film ‘Palm Trees in the Snow’ with Pablo Alborán and for the soundtrack of ‘Nobody Wants the Night’, respectively.
After his long-awaited consecration in the Spanish market, his unstoppable urge to grow as a composer led him to explore new territories: the field of music production and the world of orchestral electronic music. In production, where he is self-taught, he collaborated with Amaia Montero and Antonio Orozco, mixed Raphael’s greatest hits in his ‘Resinphónico’ project (2018), and took charge of the music for Netflix series like ‘Once Upon a Time… But Not Anymore’ (2022), ‘Welcome to Eden’ (2022), and ‘Paradise’ (2022).
In the realm of orchestral electronic music, in September 2020, he successfully launched his first album (‘Karma’ – Universal Music), masterfully and elegantly merging the two musical genres. He then started working on his second album, following the line of the first to continue the challenge of positioning classical music in the world of electronics and vice versa.
